3/2/99

Riley arrives from the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Riley has arrived.

Riley steps in, having just broken off a conversation with another SecOff. He looks somewhat dishevled, but is apparently in a good mood. He offers an amiable wave, "Heya' folks."

Niko, engaged in some sort of banter with Kathlyn, dashes his initials on a final section of paperwork before putting it aside. "Hiya," he calls cheerfully, his greeting, of course, echoed by various other SecOffs. ("Norm!")

Riley is not Norm, honest. He's too skinny to be Norm. In fact, he's almost too skinny to be Riley. But he's working on that. He does head over to Niko's desk however, prior to going to hide in his office. "Had a chance to scan those files for the new folks?"

Niko nods, rummaging in his stack for a moment before coming up with the files in question. "Sure did, thanks. Here they are. I've got all I need from them."

Riley accepts the files with a nod, "Anything of interest pop up out of them?"

Niko's head bobs in another of his characteristic short nods. "Some," he says, hand tipping back and forth. "It'll be easier to tell when they arrive; I've not really got the knack of telling too much from paper. But Caswyck looks like he'll fit in well without much help. That'll be nice."

Riley flips through the folders edges, taking note again of the names. "Will indeed. Well, I'll stop bugging you, eh?" He offers a bright grin and a short wave, turning to head office-wards.

Niko chuckles at that. "It's not bugging, but sure.

Riley walks towards the Chief Addison's Office.

Riley has left.

Kyara arrives from the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Kyara has arrived.

Niko has managed to avoid the monitors today, and is working intently on... well, something. It doesn't look like paperwork, and it's in Hellenic, so it's likely not official business.

You faintly hear a chime mark the hour.

Kyara ambles in, a wide sappy smile on her face as she offers, "Hello, everybody! Beautiful day, isn't it? Anybody want a donut?" A box of said treats is set by the coffee maker.

Some fluffy white clouds skirt across the skies above you.

Niko pauses a moment to click a few buttons on his terminal, calling up the weather report. "Beautiful day," he confirms. "No thanks on the donuts. Well... no, unless there's a chocolate one in there?"

Kyara grins, plucking a chocolate, chocolate-frosted donut from the box. "Got a variety. Catch." She flips it through the air toward Niko, and grabs a soda from the fridge.

Niko makes a decidedly startled squawklike noise as a flying donut frisbees towards him. (Pen looks very interested.) He catches the donut, managing to keep chocolate from ending up on the papers. "Uh, thanks. You're kind of chipper today."

Kyara giggles, grabbing a bavarian cream long john as she kneels down, holding it out to the dog. "Why wouldn't I be? Life's grand."

Niko acks quietly. "Kya, don't feed him that--it'll make him sick."

Kyara eeps, drawing the donut back quickly from snapping jaws. "Sorry, Pen." And she does truly sound regretful as she bites into the pastry herself. "So what's up?" she asks, sliding into her seat.

Anya spots the poor puppy's plight and offers him a slice of roast beef from her sandwich, "Dog torture..."

Niko stops rummaging for some form of puppy-okay treat, flashing a faint grin of thanks to Anya. "Other than torturing poor Pen? Uh... not a lot, I guess."

Pen seems to be generally pleased with his substitute treat. He's a good puppy. That's his job.

Kyara chuckles, already tapping away at her keyboard at rapid speed. "That's good. Quiet is nice is y'all's line of business."

Niko munches on his donut, careful to keep the icing where it belongs--inside him, and on his fingers--rather than on the papers before him. "Quiet is good," he agrees. "Quiet, normal, no chaos. Very nice."

Kyara yeps. "Hey, Nick, since Kaycen's temporarily out of commission, you looking for somebody to practice with?"

Niko's brows lift fractionally. "Practice?" he inquires. "And Kayce only has another day or so to be gone. He opted for the regenerator." And there's definitely a guilty-sounding wince in his voice for that last word.

Kyara nods amiably, not once looking away from her work. "Ah well. I'd been thinking I could use a few workouts, is all."

Niko ponders that, reaching for some more paperwork. "What sort of workouts?" he inquires. "There's quite a lot of equipment down there that can be used."

Kyara mhmmms. "That's true, and I do go there to exercise, but I meant practice in hand-to-hand."

Niko lifts his gaze from his paperwork to cast a measuring look at Kyara, then shakes his head fractionally. "Somehow, I don't think that I'd do very well as a partner, for that."

Kyara hmmms? "Why not?" She peers around the terminal briefly. "Oh... hey, I understand. I wouldn't want to lose to somebody two feet shorter than me either."

Anya can't help but look up at Kyara's latter comment, "Let me guess, modesty's not in your vocabularly list?"

Niko's brows lift, but he doesn't comment. Not when Anya just did it so well.

Kyara rolls her eyes. "I'm very modest." Getting to her feet, she casually walks over to deliver some papers to Anya, whispering to the older woman, "But do you know a better way to get a man to do something than by challenging his ego?"

Anya just shakes her head with a snicker and nods, "Yes, yes I do. Bribes of chocolate."

Niko just chokes at Kyara's first statement, very nearly proving that man was not meant to breathe chocolate donuts.

Kyara gives Niko a thoughtful look as she passes him on the way back to her desk. "Hmmm. Or baklava, perhaps." She gives him an innocent beaming smile.

Riley walks here from the Chief Addison's Office.

Riley has arrived.

Niko shakes his head, as he manages to start breathing air. "Ela's baklava's better than anything you could find downstairs," he says mildly, snagging his soda as another chocolate-crumb-inspired coughing fit asserts itself.

As if summoned by the sheer mention of chocolate Riley actually emerges from his office, bearing a positively -massive- stack of completed paperwork. It's nearly too much for him to heft, and he drops it on the edge of Anya's desk with a muffled snicker. "Done finally, I swear... Well, at least caught up, not really done."

Kyara hmphs cheerfully. "Downstairs? Why would I get it downstairs? Bribes I cook myself. Hey there, Riley," she sings out in greeting.

Niko lifts a hand in greeting to Riley, though it takes a moment for him to decide that, yes, the donut is now where it should be, rather than taking up residence in his lungs. "Hiya, Chief. And Ela's is still better, sorry. Last time you got it downstairs, though."

Riley drops down into his long unused chair opposite Anya's desk and sets about giving Pen's ears a good and thorough scritching, "Got good news for the puppy dog, yup, good news for the puppy." What is it about animals that turn otherwise sane adult human beings into gibbering idiots? "How are y'all today?"

Kyara snickers. "Chocolate it is then... if you'll deign to a workout." She flashes a grin toward Riley. "Life is perfect. What kind of news would you have for a puppy?"

Niko polishes off the last bit of his donut, idly wiping his fingers on a napkin that some kind SecOff gives him. "Fairly fine, all things considered." He casts a faint grin towards Kyara. "What, you think my ego would survive a defeat at the hands of someone two feet shorter? Chocolate wouldn't salve -that-." Even chocolate can't make it go away.

Riley's brows lift at the mention of workoutery, but he doesn't comment. Pen's ears aquire additional scritches, "Puppy got promoted, yup, yup, yup. He's a good puppy, isn't he. Yes..."

Kyara chuckles. "Okay... work out with me, and I won't bug you as to who called you a pup then." Snickering softly, she rolls her eyes at Riley. "Full commander now, is he?"

Niko offers Pen a grave salute, then grins. "Of course he got promoted. Best puppy in the AF." Kyara gets a shrug, his expression somehow a bit less cheerful. "That doesn't matter. No need to bug me about it."

Riley rummages in his pocket for a Commander's insignia which he sets about attaching to Pen's Security gray collar. Mention of calling Niko a pup gets a questioning look, but he doesn't press the issue. Not here and now, certainly. Pen also gets offered a brand new ball, one in AFN officer black with the logo emblazoned on it.

You faintly hear a chime mark the hour.

Kyara ohs? "No need to bug? Does that mean you'll tell me without being pestered?"

Niko says calmly, leaning over to ruffle Pen's fur, "No, it means I won't tell you no matter how much you bug, so you need not try."

Riley murmurs quietly to himself, "He will not tell you here, or there, he will not tell you anywhere..."

Niko snickers quietly at Riley. "Mister Perception," he murmurs.

Riley pitches Pen's new ball out across the floor, letting it bounce off various desks. "I suppose I oughta head on down and get the official mail. It's that time again and all. I just have learned nine times out of ten I don't want to see what the AF has to say."

Kyara sighs, turning back to her terminal. "You used to talk more, Nick." She nods absently at Riley's words. "Does the tenth time make up for the rest?"

Niko amiably raspberries Kyara. "I talk. Just not about that, that's all." He nods towards Riley, with a faint grimace.

Riley stretches, climbing to his feet. "Not usually. That tenth time it's usually just nothing. Which is nice enough, don't get me wrong. No news is better and all that." He offers an amiable wave, "I'll be back."

Kyara nods again, waving without looking up. "Why not, Nick?"

Niko murmurs an agreeable farewell to Riley, then says to Kyara, with a barely-repressed sigh, "Because it's none of your business. I shouldn't have mentioned it in the dining hall. I'm sorry."

Riley heads towards the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Riley has left.

Kyara doesn't repress her own sigh, though she murmurs, "I just bet you are." A few moments of silence go by before she returns perkily to the former conversation. "Okay then, what'll it take to wrangle you into a bit of sparring?"

Niko rubs his forehead for a moment, peering between his fingers at the Stilvani. "You really are relentless, aren't you?" he inquires lightly.

Kyara yups. "I have to be. I wouldn't know half the stuff I do if I weren't." A soft smile touches her lips as her eyes unfocus for a few seconds.

Niko says mildly, "There are some things that folks like to keep private, though."

Ebiannah arrives from the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Ebiannah has arrived.

Ebiannah comes striding in. "Hello, and to whom do I report a stolen shipment of Vidrian shambangits?"

Kyara nods wryly. "Far too many of those things." She glances over to blink at Ebi. "Vidrian what?"

Niko blinks once, then lifts a hand. "You can report it over here, ma'am." He starts to rummage for the appropriate forms--lots of forms--and a neat little package of red tape.

Clara arrives from the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Clara has arrived.

Clara comes in with her lab coat unbuttoned for once, holding an official looking letter on cream colored paper, and trying desperately not to burst into laughter, lips quirking in a thoroughly amused grin.

Kyara gives Clara a cheerful wave, but says, "You just missed him..."

Ebiannah finds a place to sit and waits her turn. Security seems a busy place.

Clara slides into an empty chair before Niko's desk, still trying to hold in a laugh. "Missed who?" she asks, a hint of a snicker escaping. No, she's not in line. Please conduct business around her while she silently laughs herself silly.

Niko peers quizzically at Ebiannah, offering the paperwork. "Did you not want this, ma'am?"

Ebiannah hmms. "I'm sorry, guess I was distracted by that board? You keep track of puns? What paperwork is that?" She points to the pile being offered.

Ebiannah pulls out her padd with her 'paperwork' entered into it. "This is the information on the missing shabangits."

Niko casts an innocent glance towards Clara before he nods to Ebiannah. "Some puns, yes. The groan-worthy ones. Ah... the information. May I?"

Kyara gestures toward the office. "Ril... the Chief. He just went downstairs." She peers at Clara. "What's so funny?"

Clara attempts valiently to look completely innocent at the mention of puns. "A pun a day keeps the doctor at bay," she murmurs, then quietly busies herself in rereading her letter. She glances up at Kya and simply waggles her brows above a grin.

Ebiannah hands the padd to Niko. "There is the name of the ship that the stuff came in on. The manifest number, and such. It was last seen when Pvt. Aman Reynolds checked it in for pre-recieving, but when Cpl. Klinger came in to check it in for recieving, it was gone," she explains, as if Niko couldn't read.'

Kyara may not be Alice in Wonderland, but 'curiouser and curiouser' fits her nicely right now. Glancing toward Niko, she gets up to cross the room to Clara. She mutters to Clara.

Niko inclines his head as he peers at the padd. "Thank you, ma'am. This is enough information, we'll get right on it." Looking up, he inquires, "How great is the need for the, uh, Vidrian shambangits." He knows what they are, really.

And like the Chessire Cat, Clara merely offers a thoroughly tickled but unreadable smile as she folds the letter and clasps her hands around it in her lap.

Ebiannah shakes her head. "I have no idea. I'm afraid to ask the Ambassador. She's still upset about the um, enthusiastic partying going on near her office."

Kyara sighs, throwing up her hands in semi-amused exasperation. "I'm never going to ask another question again. Ignorance is bliss, and all that stuff." Shaking her head, she returns to her desk and her work.

Clara isn't snickering, nope. Not a bit. She's innocent. Finally after a moment, she leans backwards to hand the letter over to Kyara.

Niko purses his lips. "Mm. All right. Well, as I said, we'll get right on it." He makes a copy of the information on the padd, then hands said padd back to Ebiannah. "Thanks for letting us know."

Ebiannah nods. "Thank you. Please let me know if there's anything else you need." She turns. "Oh, have those security checks been done on those civilians I asked about? The ones I'm planning on hiring as cashiers for the exchange?"

Riley arrives from the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Riley has arrived.

Kyara gives Clara a grateful smile, pulling the letter out quickly to scan it. After a few seconds, she, too, begins to snicker. "Oh dear... " She offers letter and envelope back, looking vastly amused.

Riley comes in with a thick stack of official AF documentage that he's perusing with a vague frown. Entirely enrapt in the stack's contents he heads into his office, brows knit.

Niko nods to Ebiannah's first question. Her second gets a puzzled frown, and he starts to tap at his terminal. "Mm.. some, yes. They should all be finished by this time tomorrow."

You faintly hear a chime mark the hour.

Ebiannah ahs. "Good, thank you."

Niko looks up in time to catch Riley's frown, manner puzzled. That same puzzledness is directed towards the amused-looking women, but he speaks to Ebiannah. "We'll get the information to you as soon as it's completed."

Riley walks towards the Chief Addison's Office.

Riley has left.

Ebiannah nods. "Thanks. Well, guess that's all for now, until I can finally figure out who's been shoplifting my Freaugian shoe tips."

Ebiannah heads towards the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Ebiannah has left.

Clara takes the letter back, although her smile fades significantly as Riley passes. After a brief shrug, she refolds the letter and slips it into her coat pocket and climbs to her feet and offers a half salute at Niko and Kya and anyone nearby before heading out, the better to be out of the way.

Kyara glances after Riley, murmuring quietly to herself, and gives Clara a cheerful wave. "Drop in with stuff like that anytime."

Clara grins vaguely and winks at Kya. "Hey, the better to brighten a day with," she agrees, and ducks around a pair of SecOffs and out the door.

Clara heads towards the Second Floor Elevator Lounge.

Clara has left.

Niko looks after Clara, puzzled. "What was that all about?" he inquires, though his gaze flicks to Riley's office as well before finally settling on the terminal.

Kyara smiles a bit, eyes fastened on her terminal. "Ah, not my tale to tell."

Niko glances over at Kyara for a moment, then chuckles quietly. "All right, then. I can't argue with that." He shakes his head, then turns his attention fully to his work.

Kyara just grins, and reaches for another donut. After a moment of typing, she observes, "Looked like this is one of those nine times out of ten."

Niko nods, with a small grimace. "From the look on his face, yeah." He casts a brief glance towards Riley's office, then shakes his head. "Well, the odds were for that, I guess."

Kyara yeahs, looking somewhat disgusted. "Wish we could change the odds somehow."

Niko shakes his head once more. He's good at that. "Not really anything -we- can do." He gets to his feet to snag a soda. "Want anything, while I'm up?" The question is directed to the room at large. You know. In case the room is thirsty.

Kyara shakes her can a bit, and then shakes her head. "I'm fine, thank you. Trying to cut down anyhow. I've gained five pounds since I started drinking that stuff. My mother wouldn't recognize me."

Anya frowns at her comm unit, but snags a pile of paperwork and heads into Riley's office.

Niko peers after Anya as he heads back to his terminal. "You could tell her who you were, though," he says vaguely.

Anya returns shortly thereafter, looking rather startled and setting to working again.

Kyara nods, fingers still moving over the keyboard though her eyes follow Anya to and from the office. "I'll have to see if they can visit one of these days. They want to meet y'all."
